I really like Autumn. This season is indeed special on the Island. So when I find I have to take time away during this season, I am not thrilled. The trips were both short and long. It started on Harvest Weekend with a wedding near Chicago. There was no question. I wanted to be a part of that joyous occasion. However, would the colors be here when we returned? Would we miss them?
The wedding was great and we are so glad we were there! Those moments are once in a lifetime. Autumn colors? This year they lingered. Even with the rain and the clouds the colors have been impressive. The roads are another story.
Even the short trips, the day trips have been a challenge. The road work in Sister Bay continues anew since October 19. I was not looking forward to figuring out detours while at the same time coping with the albeit normal change in the ferry schedule to six round trips a day.
Change can be taken many ways and after the "shake down trip" something funny happened. Funny in a neat way. To find a somewhat convenient route a map can help, maybe GPS. Definitely extra time is a good idea. However, an age old solution? Follow the car up ahead.
It worked! Something else happened along the way as well. The sights were beautiful! That is where that extra time came in handy. I had time to enjoy what I was discovering.
I became more adventurous and raised my eyes from the road a bit. Sometimes the color combinations took my breath away.
Other times, Mother Nature gave way to down to earth needs although she still had the last say with a bit of beauty within that necessity.
Other sights were just downright fun and gave me a chuckle. Sure made for a rapid stop on a (thankfully)"nonbusy" stretch and a double take on my part.
More good news? The colors have continued to perform on the Island. The good fortune one has living in a place surrounded by water. The Autumn leaves attract me (interrupt me?) even when I have a stop at Anna's for her season closing bag sale on my mind.
Colors distract me from important announcements. Those trees at TPAC sure have grown!
On a more peaceful road now, colors, signs, and weather take their turn to remind me to slow down...to take it all in.
If all of that is not enough of a suggestion or reminder, our signs along Main Road help us.
Sometimes, less is more. Just have to take a moment to see it.
That beauty may be just outside our front or back door whether here on the Island or elsewhere. Here's to taking it all in - big moments or small, one time or day to day.
til next time ...
