It was winter solstice yesterday - the shortest day and the longest night of the year.
This painting remains timeless. To me, it echoes what the Island is like at Solstice time.
As I understand it, the sun's most direct rays are reaching the southernmost point south of the equator which results in different amounts of sunlight reaching us.
The Weatherbug app based at the School on the Island, indicates there was less then 8 hours of daylight on this Solstice with a "sunset" happening just after 4 pm. So what better way to celebrate this dark, short day with a set of subtle images.
While this photo was not taken on Thursday, it does represent how the Island seemed today given the forecast. It's a favorite of mine from this time of year. One of those color photos which typifies the black and white day.
From now on the days get ever so slightly longer, creeping towards Spring and Summer and longer days. Really!
A plethora of Wintery conditions will occur first, though. There have been several heavy snowfalls already. Snow means some guys get outside to try their new snow movers. Crystal took this photo of Scott having fun. Super to have that extra protection against the scattering bits.
This time of year can be quite quiet - the snow can make it seem even more so.. Heading to town one night only the Middle Bar was open for a bite of dinner.
It is beautiful, although it can be dangerous too as temperatures have been up and down with snow cover melting then freezing. More snow is in the forecast tonight. And so it goes.
It just might be a white Christmas!
This was Monday up near Jackson Harbor.
So was this!
Then, on the Solstice, that lovely lady captured the shore again. A little fog? Yes.
Oh, that wind. Oh, those temps. Subtle changes say so much. Thanks for sharing, Melinda!

Solstice - Jackie Biggs
And now, the year turns.
Short dark days close as
Earth’s circle allows the hope of light
to kindle fresh beginnings;
and the weight of midwinter lifts.
The still air chills,
we are as numb leaves frozen in ice,
suspended between the end and
the suggestion of silent creation.
All is poised in soundless waiting,
no breath moves the bitter shadow.
But soft, listen, hush, shhshh ..
And now, the year turns,
shivers of breeze loosen
the endless shroud of cold mist.
The sleeping spirit quivers
as hard earth is roused;
and slow sap stirs and yawns.

And so Winter begins.
... 'til next time. Stay warm!
