I started pulling this post together in one of "those" coffee places. The one that begins and ends with "s". They're not so bad...the Red Cup has just spoiled us for other coffee houses...so glad they are open again!
Oh, we have found some nifty independent coffee spots...like this German one. The European influence is unique and the conversation inviting. Given the lovely pastries and lunch items, it reminds me of the Danish Mill. I hear it is open again as well. Maybe there is a reason to think about heading North.
Then there was the one with the mural. It certainly grabbed my attention...but I like the mural at the Red Cup better...then again, there is that gnome at the Danish Mill...hmmm, my mind keeps wandering today.
But independent coffee houses don't have cards like these. Who knew there could be a (sort of) Island connection with a mainstream establishment so far away? What/Who might that connection be? This woman with an amazing voice is hitting her stride with a newly released solo album. (Do check it out.) A lead singer with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Rhiannon Giddens spent part of her Winter working with the Birds of Chicago on their "in the works/ soon to be released" CD, Real Midnight. There's the connection...the Birds!

Members of that intriguing, pithy group have spent a good amount of their growing up years here. Oops ... there's that thinking about the Island thing again.
